Never heard a product down-sell its product in any way but it is a good way to reverse-psychologically attract and challenge buyers photographers or not.

Here is another link forwarded by an ex-colleague on a hands on review of the new Nikon D3s. By the looks of it, it is really a bang for high ISO performance with ISO 12800 being almost usable after noise reduction post processing. ISO 6400 in low light seemed super impressive! Approx 4,200 images per battery charge, HD video at 24 fps with stereo and costs USD$5,199.95! Wow! If only some kind soul can give one to me right now!
